LET’S GO POOL HOPPING

Pop-In@Nordstrom Goes Poolside puts a modern splash on Old Hollywood glamour with amazing swimsuits, mega-size floaties and cocktail party essentials for the luxe life aquatic.

The Pop-In shops are curated by Olivia Kim—Nordstrom’s wave-chasing, Prada-wearing, tattoo-collecting Director of Creative Projects—Pop-In@Nordstrom is an ongoing series of themed pop-up shops meant to showcase deserving designers, expose you to something surprising and embrace Nordstrom’s exploratory heritage (which traces its start to turn-of-20th-century Seattle). Because the Pop-In themes are temporary and ever changing, they hope you’ll find something you love today and something you love even more tomorrow.

THE CHALLENGE

The Pop-In’s themselves are a test of quick strategic thinking, trusting your gut and producing a variety of concepts in a short amount of time. Each Pop-In runs for only a month. Because of this our timeline from concept to completion mirrors that month timeline.

For awhile the team had been discussing a summer, pool themed Pop-In. It would be perfect for the time of year and Olivia was really inspired by the old hollywood poolside, circa the Beverly Hills Hotel in its prime. But lets be real, it’s still in the thick of its prime.

OUR FOCUS —
• Creating a unique experience that our users haven’t seen before
• Branding is subtle, yet cheeky
• Encourage sharable elements, both online and in-store
• Make it move!

BRANDING POOLSIDE

The color palette, typefaces and logo organically came together rather quickly. We slightly altered the Pop-In typeface, Champion Bantamweight, to push it from it’s heavy, bold nature into having more summer vibes. This complimented the illustrations and animated GIFs found through out the experience.

ANIMATED ELEMENTS

Responsive Website

The idea of turning the hero header into Olivia’s guestbook was such a fun concept to design towards. This has multiple ‘messages’ from Olivia that it would rotate through. The leaves on the sides of the guest book animated, as well as when your cursor went over the ‘pool’ it trailed water ripples.

The Shop pages could be viewed through a variety of different ways: Viewing all of the products and category based, which contains Womens, Mens, Accessories and Home.

IN-STORE EXPERIENCE

Like most Ecommerce companies these days, our online presence at Nordstrom was extremely important, but along with designing a unique experience for web we had to always shift our mindset to how this would represent itself in a brick and mortar.

We strived to create a space that felt unlike anything anyone has experienced in Nordstrom. We created custom bags for each Pop-In and always has a share-able “selfie moment”.

EXCLUSIVE POOLSIDE PLAYLIST BY MEXICAN SUMMER

Looking for dreamy tunes to soundtrack summer hangouts? Check this exclusive mix from independent Brooklyn-based music label Mexican Summer–the brain trust which popularized Best Coast and Washed Out a few years back–compiled by the man in charge, Keith Abrahamsson. The music is a blend of the beautiful and the strange. You will find rock, pop and electronic music. Old styles and new ones.

And it all goes together fluidly.
